The First Sikh Temple in Dar-es-Salaam was built in 1918 on the Arab Street in a very temporary building. It was later replaced with a permanent building in 1926. With the increasing Sikh population and keeping in view of the shortage of accommodation of the Temple as well as the Rest house it was thought necessary to construct a big building. With the efforts of the Sikh Community of Tanganyika and it East Africa this dream became true and a grand double storied building costing TSh 400,000/- containing a big hall, office, library, rest house, and store rooms was ready for opening on 21st March 1962. Almost all other communities of East Africa also contributed generously for the new Temple.
The opening ceremony of the new Sikh Temple was performed by Messers Kartar Singh Hari Singh, who were also building contractors of this Temple.
Feeling the needs of the religious knowledge of the Sikh children a school with Punjabi medium of instruction was opened in 1937 and its functioning quite efficiently with a well-organized and well-educated staff. The school was formerly known as Khalsa School and is now known as Guru Nanak Primary School.
The Khalsa Girls Boarding House was erected in 1949 to accommodate students from up-country receiving education in various institutions of Dar-es-Salaam. Due to the increasing number of the children the Boarding House was further extended in 1955.
A Boys Boarding House started in 1946 in a temporary building was replaced with a permanent building in 1962.
An Educational Trust Building was built in 1950.
